Panthers Down Aggies In HPU Classic
HIGH POINT -- The North Carolina A&T volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-19, 17, 14) at the hands of High Point in the opening match of the High Point University Classic, Friday evening at the Millis Center.
A&T (1-12) took a 4-2 advantage to start the first set but High Point tied the game at 4 with a pair of kills. Aleena McDaniel helped the Aggies regain their lead after delivering a kill to push to a 6-5 advantage. A&T continued to play the Panthers (7-5) tight but never recovered its lead. The Aggies got within three with a kill from Maris Kellar to cut High Point’s lead to 19-16. The Panthers ended the set on a 6-3 run.
High Point made it difficult for the Aggies in the second set after taking a 17-9 lead. Kills from Jillian Nobles and Liz Martino sliced the Panthers lead to 17-11 but the Panthers continued to control the set to get the win.
In the third set, the Aggies trailed 6-5 until a service ace from T'keyah Davis and a High Point error gave them the 7-6 advantage. The Panthers used a 7-0 rally to regain the lead, 14-7. A&T put together a 4-0 run with kills from Nobles and Brooke Stamnes to cut the Panthers lead to 14-11. High Point scored four unanswered points to extend its advantage to 18-11. High Point won the set on an 8-3 rally.
Nobles led the Aggies with seven kills. This is the second time this season that the freshman has led the Aggies in kills. Martino tallied 18 of the Aggies 22 assists. Ashley Johnson also finished with 10 digs.
Chelsea Davis recorded a game-high 17 kills and Kristin Heldt added 10 for High Point.
A&T will take on Davidson (11 a.m.) and Murray State (5 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 21 on the final day of the tournament.
