GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team remained perfect at Corbett Sports Center with a 62-47 victory over Campbell Monday evening.

“This was the last stage of our preparation for conference and we wanted to finish with a win,” head coach Tarrell Robinson said. “We have to take care of the ball better moving forward but I thought we gave a great effort.”

The Aggies improved to 10-2 overall and are 5-0 at home this season. A&T was led by senior Tracy King who finished with a game-high 17 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four assists on 7-for-14 shooting. It marked the 10th time she has scored in double figures this season.

Junior Ariel Bursey added 11 points and redshirt junior Debbie Smith tallied 10. Christina Carter tallied six assists.

“It felt good to be back at home in front of our fans,” King said. “We ended the non-conference schedule on a good note with a win which is big heading into conference play.”

The Aggies ran away from the Camels early in the first half and jumped to its largest lead of the half, 19-6, with just under 10 minutes remaining. Campbell cut its double-digit deficit to 24-15 with a layup from Ashley James with 3:44 remaining in the first half. Turnovers from both teams limited their offense as the Aggies closed out the first half with a 27-15 advantage.

In the second half, Smith knocked down a 3-pointer from Carter to extend A&T’s lead to 32-17 with 17:42 to play in the game. After trailing 36-24 the Camels got within its closest reach of the Aggies lead with a layup from Gaines to cut their lead to 36-26 at the 14:43 mark. A&T remained in control and used a 15-9 run to push its lead to 52-35 with 4:45 remaining. With 42 seconds remaining, the Camels went on a 6-1 run capped by a 3-pointer at the buzzer but it wasn’t enough to damage the Aggies advantage.

Gaines led the Camels with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Roslyn Presley finished with 12 points.

A&T will open up conference play on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Daytona Beach against Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m.
