Aggies Closes Out Season With Win At UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – It was a perfect day for the ladies of the North Carolina A&T tennis team as they wrapped up the regular season with a 7-0 win over Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday afternoon. 

“The win today over UMES was a solid way to wrap up our season,” head coach Bruce Myers said. “More importantly it was certainly a great way for our lone senior Kimberly Stalling to end her Aggie tennis career.”

It was the third and final win of the 2014 campaign for A&T (3-15, 0-6) who missed qualifying for the MEAC tournament set to take place next week. The Aggies aren’t hanging their heads, however, as they look forward to continuing to build their program in the years to come.

Kimberly Stalling who is the captain for the Aggies has been instrumental in leading her teammates, notched her third win of the year in singles, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Petra Jerabkova.

“She has suffered some trying times over her four years so the team really came together to beat a MEAC opponent,” said Myers.

Junior Kenya Colbert defeated Reine Fowajuh 6-0, 6-1 in the top singles spot for her second win. Sophomore Jayla Scott and freshman Saundra Smith swept Jasmine Jennings and Aleksandra Manolova, 6-0, 6-0 in the second and fourth spots. Freshmen Lexxus Betts and Christina Johnson secured the final two points by default.

The Aggies also swept doubles play, as Stalling and Colbert topped Fowajuh and Jennings, 8-0. Scott and Smith grabbed an 8-0 decision over Manolova and Jerabkova as A&T also won the third match by default.

 “It’s been a very competitive weekend overall and probably the three closest matches we’ve played all season,” Myers said about A&T’s games against George Mason, Coppin State and UMES.

“It is a very small first step in rebuilding this program. With the level of talent we are bringing in this fall and the support of the administration behind us, I look very much forward to a winning tennis program that Aggie nation and its strong alumni fan base can support and be proud of for years to come.”
