Box Score GREENSBORO (October 7, 2016) – North Carolina A&T volleyball picked up their fourth straight win and in doing so looked dominant over the final two sets to remain undefeated in conference play. The Aggies knocked MEAC foe Bethune-Cookman 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-9, 25-17) at Moore Gymnasium Thursday night to set up a match up of undefeated MEAC teams as Florida A&M comes to the Gate City for a 3 p.m., match at Moore.
“It was a very exciting win tonight. Bethune-Cookman is a very good team and we played very well,” said head coach Hal Clifton. “I'm really proud of how our team worked hard all week to prepare for this match and I feel like we put a complete match together. Our setters balanced the offense and our attackers did a good job finishing. I felt like defensively we did a great job at the net setting the block and then defending. It was just an all-around great effort from our entire team.”
The Aggies improved to 6-9 overall and 3-0 on the season. It is their first 3-0 start in the conference since 2005. Two Aggies came away with double-doubles in the win. Junior outside hitter Samara Brown produced 18 kills and 10 digs while senior setter Liz Martino had 23 assists with 10 digs. Jasmine Lindor added four block assists to her season total and Alyssa Pitt hit .385 with 14 kills and four errors on 26 total attempts. The team finished at .218 afther hitting a blistering .440 in Set 3.
After splitting the first two sets with the Wildcats, the Aggies took over the match in the third and fourth sets. N.C. A&T went on an 8-0 run halfway through the third set to take a 13-3 lead. That lead eventually ballooned to 22-7 on a solo block by Pitt. Bethune-Cookman struggled with the Aggies defense throghout the set, hitting -.143 as the Aggies had 12 digs and three team blocks on B-CU's 28 attack attempts. The Aggies, on the other hand, had 12 kills with only one attack error.
N.C. A&T's dominance continued into the fourth set. After having four attack errors over the first two sets of the match, Pitt had seven kills, no attack errors on 11 attempts over the final two sets. The Aggies broke open a close fourth set by going on a 4-0 run capped off by a Brown kill to take a 17-11 lead. The lead was extended to eight on back-to-back kills from Christa Wilson before Lindor ended the set and match with a kill placed in the middle of the Wildcats defense.
The Aggies came back strong after dropping Set 2, closing out the evening hitting .263.
Florida A&M will come into Sunday's contest 4-0 in the MEAC after a 3-0 win against N.C. Central Friday night. Sunday's winner will come away with sole possession of first-place in the MEAC's southern division.
