SPARTANBURG, S.C. (January 24, 2017) – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team continues to show how much the program is improving. Against a tough team in Wofford, the Aggies lost 6-1. Besides taking a game off the Terriers, the Aggies were overall difficult opponents.
N.C. A&T (0-2) got its one victory and its first singles victory of the season in the form of Sheyla Ramirez. Ramirez bounced back from a first-set loss where Wofford's Catherine Martin was able to win 7-5. Ramirez came back strong in the second set with a convincing 6-2 win. It set up a tiebreaker set in which Ramirez won 10-5. There was another tiebreaker set at No. 5. Junior Nadia Hilton-Adams and Wofford's Taylor Carlson battled fiercely in the first set where Hilton-Adams broke through with a 7-6 win. Carlson took set 2, 6-3 before winning the tiebreaker 10-5.
Wofford's Cassidy Hicks and Kalli Karas won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively over freshman Renita Ruiz Rabadan and junior Khalia Powell. Sophomore Angelica Martinez and freshman Klara Smolikova also lost their singles matches at No. 3 and No. 6.
The Aggies competitiveness was also shown in doubles. Rabadan and Smolikova won their No. 3 doubles match over Carlson and Curran Carver, 7-5. Wofford, however, took the doubles point by winning the other two doubles contests to take two out of three.
N.C. A&T is back in action Saturday, Jan. 28 as they play their home opener at the Aggie Tennis Complex against Presbyterian at 9 a.m.
