JACKSON, Miss. (March 9, 2017) – North Carolina A&T softball split their doubleheader with Jackson State at Jackson State Softball Complex on Thursday as they won the first game 11-2, but fell in the late afternoon game 9-4. The game was called early because there was not enough daylight to continue.

Sophomore Zadia Davis continued her recent hot hitting streak, batting .571 over the two games with three runs and an RBI. From the circle, Mohagony Headen led the way over eight innings pitched, allowing only six hits and three earned runs. Zadasia Waddell struggled to find her rhythm in Game 2, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs over four innings.

In their second consecutive win, N.C. A&T had two singles in the first inning from Stephanie Williams and Jillian Nobles, but were unable to capitalize. The runs started piling on in the third, however, as Pacheco led off with a single and Brunson followed up with an infield single. Two stolen bases from Pacheco and Brunson put the runners on second and third. Talisha Jenkins loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch and a hit to center field from Raven Gray was enough to get two runners home. A single from Davis was enough to score Jenkins from third to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead.

The Aggies (7-15-1) added another run in the fifth as Davis singled and reached third on a throwing error at shortstop that also put Williams on second. A groundout to third base gave Davis enough time to use her speed to get home to move N.C. A&T ahead 4-0. Entering the seventh up 4-2, the Aggies lit up the scoreboard, tacking on seven more runs.  Jenkins led off with a walk and stole second before Gray was walked. A sacrifice bunt from Davis advanced the runners. A single from Williams scored Gray and an error put Williams on second. A triple from Nobles drove in Williams and a follow up single from Alexandria Simmons brought Nobles home for a 6-2 lead.

The big blast from Brunson gave her a team-leading third home run of the season and was enough to give the Aggies the final 11-2 lead.

N.C. A&T also had the early lead in the second game as Gray led off the game with a single and Davis followed up with a well-placed bunt. As she did in the last game, Brunson came in to drive in some runs on a two-run RBI double to left field to put the Aggies ahead 2-0. However, Jackson State took over a 5-2 lead in the third as they drove in four runs off four hits. Three more runs in the fourth put the Aggies at an 8-2 deficit, but they responded in the fifth.

Green and Davis both had a single and Brunson loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. A two-run RBI single from Nobles put the Aggies back in contention at 8-4, but the game ended early as the sun set with the Tigers leading 9-4.

Play resumes for the Aggies on Tuesday as they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty at 6 p.m.
