Liberty Defeats Aggies in 5
LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 14, 2017) – North Carolina A&T softball fell to the Liberty Flames to close out their eight-game road stretch, 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon to fall to 7-15-1.
Lauren Dunlow led the Aggies, going 2-for-2 with two doubles. Zadia Davis and Kimberly Brunson also had hits in the contest. Mohagony Headen threw four innings from the circle, allowing nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Offensively, Davis got the Aggies first hit on a single through the left side and Dunlow produced a double to left field with an out on the board before Davis moved her to third on a throwing error by Alexia Taylor at third base. However, a strikeout swinging from Raven Gray stranded the two runners. In the top of the fourth, Brunson singled up the middle, but two following outs prevented her from advancing.
N.C. A&T put up the greatest stand in the top of the fourth as Talisha Jenkins reached after being hit by the pitch and Dunlow pushed her to third on a double down the left field line. Davis struck out swinging but reached first on a throwing error after the ball escaped the catcher on a third strike. A fielder’s choice to Gray loaded the bases despite Jenkins being thrown out trying to reach home. However, with two outs, Jillian Nobles fouled out to the catcher to end the game.
The Flames gained an early lead as they took the 1-0 advantage after the first inning as Autumn Bishop led off with a home run to right field off pitcher Headen. Liberty struck again in the second as Emily Sweat led off with a single to first and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A walk to Deidra See put runners on first and second before a throwing error by Headen on a sacrifice bunt from Jasmeen Click made it a 3-0 game.
The Aggies found themselves down further after the third as Tori Zavodny led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 4-0. The Flames closed out the contest in five innings after adding six runs in the fourth as a single and home run led off the inning to push Liberty ahead 6-0. A three-run homer later in the inning by Zavodny put the Flames up 9-0 and a triple from Alexia Taylor put her in the position to score the final run of the game on a single to center field.
N.C. A&T returns home to face crosstown rival UNC Greensboro on Thursday, Mar. 16 at Lady Aggie Softball Complex at 4 p.m.
