Late Runs Lift Rattlers
GREENSBORO (April 8, 2017) – After holding the lead in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at Aggie Softball Complex, North Carolina A&T gave up late runs in two losses to Florida A&M. The Rattlers grabbed a 5-2 win in Game 1 before winning 9-7 in Game 2.
Despite facing a strong Florida A&M offense, Aggie pitching held strong early in the day. In Game 1, Mohagony Headen allowed eight hits and five runs through 7.2 innings pitched although three of the runs were scored in the eighth inning.
In Game 2, Waddell gave up seven hits and five runs through 6.2 innings, but also allowed two runs to cross the plate in the seventh. From the plate, Lauren Dunlow, Talisha Jenkins and Alyssa Green led the way in Game 2, contributing two hits apiece. Jenkins was also credited with an RBI while Green produced two. While the Aggies did not have as much of an offensive presence in Game 1, six Aggies came away with hits while Alexandria Simmons and Kimberly Brunson each had an RBI.
After a tough loss in Game 1, N.C. A&T came back roaring in Game 2, taking over a 3-2 lead at the end of the second inning. The Rattlers scored two on two hits and an error in the first inning before the Aggies produced three runs off three hits in the second. Brunson was walked and a single from Nathaly Pacheco advanced her to second. A single from Jenkins loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored the first N.C. A&T run of the game and a single up the middle from Green scored Pacheco with the game tied 2-2 and runners on first and third. Green steals second and in the process, giving time for Jenkins to reach home before she was tagged out attempting to reach third.
The Aggies struck again in third to take a 4-2 lead as a bases-loaded situation allowed Brunson to reach on a fielder’s choice while Dunlow scored. While the Rattlers scored one in the fourth, the Aggies increased their lead further in the sixth. Brunson led off with a single up the middle and Pacheco reached after getting hit in the foot with a pitch from Victoria Burse. A single to left field from Jenkins and an advancement on the throw was enough for Brunson to tack on another run with runners on second and third. Green stepped to the plate for a single up the middle and Jenkins then scored on a wild pitch at the next at-bat to put the Aggies ahead 7-3. Unfortunately, the Rattlers tied the contest in the seventh off three home runs with two outs on the board and eventually captured the 9-7 victory in extra innings as a leadoff triple and a walk set the stage for a two-out triple to left field from Jamesia Stoudemire.
N.C. A&T also held the lead throughout most of Game 1 as well. They took over the lead after three innings. A fielding error put Raven Gray on base and a follow-up triple from Green scored the Aggies first run. A single to right field scored Green for the 2-1 Aggie advantage. The Rattlers tied the game in the sixth before taking over in extra innings. Amber Fullwood hit her second home run of the game with a runner on base to lead 4-2 and a home run on the next at-bat gave Florida A&M all they needed to close out on top.
