GREENSBORO (April 18, 2017) – North Carolina A&T cooled off a bit on Tuesday as Winthrop left War Memorial Stadium with an 11-4 win over the Aggies in non-conference baseball.

The Aggies came into the game 9-3 in their last 12 games including a four-game winning streak after sweeping Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival North Carolina Central over the weekend. But the Aggies (20-15) fell behind early on Tuesday and could never recover. Keenen Herring, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning, led the Aggies by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Four other Aggies had multiple-hit games with juniors Myles Sowell, Greg White and Forest Kimbrell and sophomore Jarrett Norman getting two hits apiece. Norman and Kimbrell both scored a run.

It took a little while before the Aggies offense got going. They stranded six runners over the first five innings of the game. A home run by Brandon Fite and two-run RBI single up the middle by Tyler Halstead in the sixth inning gave the Eagles (21-16) a 9-0 lead. Earlier in the game, Mitch Spiers hit a solo home run to help Winthrop’s cause.

N.C. A&T did getting going in the sixth against Winthrop starter Daniel Willcutt (RHP). N.C. A&T head coach Ben Hall started going to his bench in the sixth starting with a one-out, pinch-hit single from Kimbrell. Norman followed with a single through the left side to set up a pinch-hit RBI single from Herring to put the Aggies on the board as Kimbrell scored. Senior Kyle Clary kept the inning going as he reached on an error that allowed Norman to score. Junior Milton Rivera closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI groundout as Herring scored to cut the Eagles lead to 9-3.

Winthrop tacked on two runs in the seventh before the Aggies closed out their scoring in the eighth inning. Herring and Clary opened the inning with singles followed by Rivera reaching on an error to load the bases with one out. Dawnoven Smith, who entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter, scored Herring on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field. The Aggies did put two runners on in the ninth with two outs as Kimbrell and Norman singled, but the game ended when Herring hit a groundball near the outfield grass that Fite fielded at second before it went to the outfield. Herring reached on a single but Kimbrell overran the bag at third base. Fite alertly fired a throw to third to throw out Kimbrell at third to end the game.

The Aggies, who play Norfolk State Wednesday at 5 p.m., at War Memorial Stadium, used five pitchers on Tuesday as RHP Leon Hunter (0-1) took the loss. Willcutt (2-0) got the win after going seven innings and giving up one earned run.
