Alvarez Leads Aggies At Winthrop Intercollegiate
ROCK HILL, S.C. (October 22, 2017) – North Carolina A&T completed its third women’s golf tournament of the season at the Winthrop Collegiate Invitational at the par 72 5,993-yard Rock Hill Country Club. The Aggies finished 10th at the event with senior Sofia Alvarez continuing her outstanding start to the 2017-18 season by finishing in the top-20 for the second time in three tournaments.
High Point University won the tournament by 15 strokes by shooting 2-under par. The Panthers were followed by Presbyterian College (+13), Winthrop (+16), Appalachian State (+19) and UNC Asheville (+21).
N.C. A&T opened the tournament on Saturday. Alvarez was consistent throughout the 18-hole first round. She shot even par on the par 3’s and par 5’s while shooting plus-1 on the par 4’s. It resulted in Alvarez shooting 1-over 73 on Saturday to finish the first day tied for eighth. Junior Bo Young Park had a good day on the par 4’s by shooting 1-over on those holes. She also shot 1-over on the par 5’s.
Park finished Day 1 tied for 11th by shooting a 4-over 76. Senior Jill Harvison shot an 82 on the first day, she and Cayla Smith shot the only eagles on the day. In the first action of her career, freshman Madison Harriman shot plus-13. Sophomore Deja Smith rounded out the five Aggies who participated on Saturday.
The second day didn’t go as smoothly for N.C. A&T. Low score on the day was Alvarez’s 9-over 81. Park shot 10-over on Sunday. Park finished just outside of the top-20 by finishing tied for 21st. Alvarez led the tournament with 27 pars. Park finished the tournament with 21 pars, but the Aggies were not able to produce any birdies over the 36-hole tournament.
N.C. A&T will play their final tournament of the semester in a few days when they travel to Savannah, Ga., to play in the Savannah State Fall Tiger Invitational, Oct. 30-31.
