EAST GREENSBORO (September 8, 2018) – North Carolina A&T closed out the annual Aggie-Spartan Invitational with a three-set loss to Winthrop (25-13, 25-11, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center and a three-set loss to UNC Greensboro (25-11, 25-18, 25-18) Saturday night at Fleming Gymnasium.

The Aggies slipped to 3-5 on the season on a tough day that saw the Aggies only have a positive hitting percentage in two of the six sets they played on Saturday. Sophomore Edie Brewer did earn all-tournament honors after averaging 5.50 assists, 2.50 digs and 1.20 kills per set in the three-match invite. She also added seven total blocks.

The day ended with the Aggies playing stronger than they did earlier in the day. UNCG (6-4) came out and hit .280 in the first set to take down the Aggies. The second set saw the Aggies move to within two at 17-15 on a kill from freshman Lily Walton. The Spartans moved the lead out to five, 20-15 before Macenzie Richards halted the rally with her third kill of the set. The Aggies never got any closer than four, however. After a kill from junior Leila Haynesworth cut the Spartans lead to 23-18, the set ended on two Aggie errors.

N.C. A&T put together a 5-0 run in the third set two cut UNCG's lead to four at 19-15. A Walton and Brewer block assists along with a Brewer kill aided the Aggies during the run. Again, the Spartans kept the Aggies from getting any closer than four. After a Richards kill cut the lead to 21-16, UNCG responded with a kill. Following a Haynesworth kill to make it 22-17, an Aggies attack error helped UNCG retaliate. Sophomore Courteney Pitt got the final kill of the set and match for the Aggies to make it 23-18 before an attack error and a kill from UNCG's Mikaela Weidmann closed things out.

Haynesworth finished with seven kills while Brewer had five kills, 14 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Earlier in the day against Winthrop (2-7), freshman Andrea Laboy-Rivera had 13 digs and Pitt finished with seven kills. The Eagles closed out the match strong by hitting .375 in the second set and .385 in the third. After the Aggies had a rough time with accuracy in the first two sets, they did recover to hit .156 in the third.

N.C. A&T returns to action 6 p.m., Tuesday when they face Gardner-Webb.
