Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior outside hitter Courteney Pitt and sophomore junior right side hitter Fatimah Shabazz had another great day as North Carolina A&T won its second consecutive match with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) sweep against Alabama A&M Saturday morning at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium at the Wofford Invitational.

Pitt recorded a match-high with 18 kills, while Shabazz added 12 kills and four blocks with a .556 hitting percentage and sophomore libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera recorded a match-high 12 digs.

Pitt and Shabazz were both named to the all-tournament team as Pitt averaged 4.82 kills and 1.36 digs while Shabazz averaged 3.73 kills and 0.55 blocks in three games during the tournament.

“I was very pleased with our energy and our effort right out of the blocks,” N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton said.  “We played tough throughout and overcame a four-point deficit in the third.  I loved our composure against a very good A&M team that could very well win the SWAC.”

Junior setter Edie Brewer led the team with 25 assists and added eight kills and seven digs while freshman setter Addy Warfield added 11 assists and three digs.

The Aggies got off to a roaring start by taking a 20-9 lead. But the Bulldogs scored the next two points to cut the lead to nine points, 20-11.  The Aggies outscored Alabama A&M 5-4 during the rest of the set to win the set by 10 points and to take a 1-0 match lead. N.C. A&T jumped out to another nice lead in the second as they earned a 9-4 lead. The Bulldogs scored the next three points to cut the lead to two points at 9-7.

N.C. A&T put together a 5-1 spurt to take a 14-8 advantage after a Pitt kill, back-to-back kills from Macenzie Richards and back-to-back service aces from Pitt.

Pitt helped the Aggies close out the Bulldogs in the second set by securing three kills the rest of the way. Shabazz chipped in with two kills down the stretch and Makaylah Elliott and Brewer had a kill apiece.

The Bulldogs earned a 12-7 lead in the final stanza but led by Pitt's four kills, N.C. A&T scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a two-point lead, 18-16. Alabama A&M went on a 3-1 to tie the set at 19, but the Aggies scored six of the final seven points to win the set by five points and to win the match after a Shabazz kill, two kills from Pitt and an AAMU attack error.

The Bulldogs were led by Maya Evans with seven kills, Megan Evans with 28 assists and with 12 digs for a double-double.
