Darren Corbett returns to North Carolina A&T as an assistant coach at a men's basketball program his father turned into an MEAC power in the 1980's. It is his second stint with the Aggies program, having served as an assistant during the 1996-97 season under head coach Roy Thomas. He helped the Aggies to the MEAC tournament championship game that season, their last trip to the title game before returning in 2013 and helping the Aggies win the title. Corbett is in his second season under head coach Cy Alexander.
Corbett works with the Aggies wing players and guards. In 2012-13, small forward Adrian Powell won Most Outstanding Player honors for the MEAC tournament., and junior college transfer Lamont Middleton led the Aggies in scoring.
Corbett has been a fixture in the Guilford County high school basketball scene for more than 15 years.
He has taught and coached at Southern Guilford, Page and Grimsley High Schools. His experience in player development, as well as athletic administration will be a tremendous benefit to the A&T program. He also brings to the position his experience as an educator with a focus on strong academics.
Corbett has spent the last 10 seasons as the head coach of the varsity boys basketball team at Greensboro Grimsley High School, where he compiled a 130-118 record. He led the Whirlies to two regular-season conference championship titles (2004, 08), seven Class 4A playoff appearances and four sectional finals. His Whirlies teams have made the playoffs the past five seasons. In 2010, Grimsley won the Pizza Hut Little Four Invitational Championship. Corbett earned Metro 4-A Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 and '08, and was named the Greensboro News & Record Coach of the Year in '04.
His duties at Grimsley expanded when he became the assistant athletic director in 2007. He helped supervise athletic events, determine the eligibility of student-athletes and scheduled games and events. At Grimsley, Corbett also taught English to ninth, 11th, and 12th graders. He was named the Guilford County High School Teacher of the Year in 2010, and was the Grimsley High School Teacher of the Year in 2009.
Prior to bringing success to Grimsley High, Corbett found success as the head coach of the junior varsity boys basketball team and as assistant coach of the varsity boys basketball team at Greensboro Page High School 1997-2002. There, he compiled a 58-41 record, and the JV team earned regular-season conference championship titles in 1999 and 2000. He also taught English to freshmen and seniors. He was the Page High School Teacher of the year in 2002, and was the Page High School Freshman Teacher of the Year in 1998 and 1999.
He also served as an assistant coach at Southern Guilford High School for the varsity boys basketball team for the 1995-96 season.
Corbett graduated from A&T in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in English secondary education. He is the son of A&T legendary head coach Don Corbett, who led the Aggies to seven consecutive MEAC men's basketball tournament titles from 1982-88. The Aggies also reached seven straight NCAA tournaments during the same span under Corbett's father as he won a school-record 254 games in 14 seasons.
