Odell Witherspoon III
Position: Assistant Coach

Odell Witherspoon III joins enters his first season as an assistant men's basketball coach at North Carolina A&T. 

Prior to coming to A&T, Witherspoon served as an assistant basketball coach at Gulf Coast Community College (Fla.) for three seasons.  Witherspoon helped head coach Jay Powell lead the Commodores to an 18-11 record, with a third-place finish in the Panhandle Conference during the 2009-10 season.  He also helped send 13 sophomores on to four-year institutions, including 11 to Division I institutions.  Witherspoon's responsibilities included being the recruiting coordinator, working with post players, coordinating film exchange and administering preseason skill work.

Witherspoon also coordinated study hall sessions, served as the academic liaison between the staff and professors and worked as the living quarters director.

Before his time at GCCC, Witherspoon worked under Chris Chaney, one of the best prep school coaches in the nation at The Patterson School. He was the assistant basketball starting in 2008. The Patterson School finished the 2008-09 season 34-3, and was ranked No. 1 among prep schools for most of the season.  Seven members of the team went on to play Division I.  While at The Patterson School, Witherspoon taught physical education and coordinated all travel for the two teams at the school.  Additionally, he served as a student academic advisor and a residence hall director. 

The Division I players he has worked with include Hassan Whiteside (Marshall/Sacramento Kings), Kirk Snyder (No. 16 pick 2004 NBA Draft), Paul Cooper (Texas Tech), Patrick Davis (Alabama State), Javon Dawson (Utah), Vincent Council (Providence), Hunter McClintock (Oral Roberts), Travis Smith (Mercer), Arsalan Kazemi (Rice), Deandre Kane (Marshall) and Eric Buckner (Georgia State).

Prior to his coaching career, Witherspoon worked in sports management, gaining critical experience in managing basketball clients while developing his recruiting and skills.  He spent two years at the McNeil Sports Group as a client relations manager, where he recruited prospective professional basketball clients by attending NBA pre-draft camps, working with players, parents, coaches and advisors. 

He served as the basketball operations coordinator with the Momentum Sports Group from 2003-05, where he managed the daily affairs of professional basketball clientele including marketing, contract negotiating and other services.  He worked with former NBA head coach Bob Hill in skill development as part of NBA pre-draft training preparation. He interned with the Charlotte Coliseum and the McNeil Sports Groups as well.

Witherspoon is a graduate of UNC Charlotte with a bachelor's degree in communication studies.
