Weekend Preview: After eight matches on the road, the Aggies are coming home. The A&T volleyball team will be hosting their home opener on Friday, Sept. 7 in the first match of the three-match Spartan-Aggie Invitational. The Aggies will look to capture their first win of the season this weekend, and hope to do so in front of their home crowd. The Aggies have seen some great production from their freshmen so far. Outside hitter Brooke Stamnes has been named to the all-tournament team in consecutive tournaments, and four key statistical categories are led by freshmen. A freshman leads the team in kills (68--Aleena McDaniel), service aces (14--Brooke Stamnes), digs (108--Ashley Johnson) and points (82.0--Brooke Stamnes).
Spartan-Aggie Invitational Scouting Report: From. Sept 7-8, the Aggies will co-host the Spartan-Aggie Invitational with UNC Greensboro. Other participants include UNC Asheville and American. The Aggies will host American 7 p.m., Friday at Corbett Sports Center before taking on UNC Greensboro across town on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Aggies will end their invitational by hosting UNC Asheville at 4 p.m., at Corbett Sports Center. American ended the 2011 season 23-11 record, and has started its 2012 season 2-3. UNC Greensboro ended the 2011 season 15-17, while UNC Asheville was 15-14.
Effective Evans: Senior middle hitter Andrea Evans has had a terrific start to the 2012 season. She leads the team with a .297 hitting percentage and 26 total blocks. She was highly efficient in the team's three matches at the Western Carolina Catamounts Classic. She ended the Classic with 17 kills and four errors in 40 total attempts for a team-best .325 hitting percentage. She hit .545 against St. Peter's College, which set a new career high, and .500 against Northern Kentucky. She had a .714 hitting percentage against Coppin State on Aug. 31. She ended the Coppin State Invitational with 23 kills, six aces, five digs and 19 total blocks. She averaged 1.44 kills and 1.19 digs per set in the Invitational.
Magnificent McRae: Sophomore Aprill McRae ended the match against Coppin State on Aug. 31 with 15 kills in 23 attempts for a .652 hitting percentage-which is the second highest percentage in a single match since 2002, and just the sixth time that an A&T player has hit over .600 since 2002. The last time an A&T player recorded a hitting percentage over .600 was when Tatiana Cooper hit .619 on Sept. 3, 2010. Her 15 kills also tied Aleena McDaniel for most by an A&T player this season.
