WILMINGTON – Freshman Jillian Nobles finished with a season-high eight kills in a 3-0 (25-12, 15, 14) setback to Western Carolina at the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic in Hanover Hall on Saturday afternoon.
WCU (8-3) recorded a hitting percentage of .323 to conquer the Aggies (1-8) who hit just .026 in the match.
In the first set A&T trailed 8-6 until Aleena McDaniel got the Aggies within one with a kill. Western Carolina extended its lead to 17-8 with a 9-1 run. A&T took advantage of a pair of WCU errors to slice the lead to 17-10. The Catamounts put together a 9-2 rally to finish the set.
Down 21-10 in the second set, A&T tried to resurface by scoring three straight points but WCU responded by scoring three points of its own. The Aggies tallied two more points before the Catamounts ended the set with a kill.
Western Carolina jumped to a 13-4 lead to start the third set until A&T scored four consecutive points to cut the lead to 13-8. The Aggies never threatened the Catamounts advantage as they continued to control the set and finish the game on a 13-6 run.
Nobles led the Aggies in kills and Liz Martino finished with 21 assists. Defensively Ashley Johnson headed the Aggies with 21 digs
A&T will close out the tournament by facing UNC Asheville at 5 p.m.
