GREENSBORO – A low hitting performance by the North Carolina A&T volleyball team caused it to drop a 3-0 (25-14, 11, 17) decision Elon in a non-conference match, Tuesday evening at Moore Gymnasium.

The Aggies (2-18 overall) were plagued with errors which helped the Phoenix improve to 11-9 overall. Elon recorded seven errors and had an attacking percentage of .368.

“We played some good points tonight but we just weren’t able to finish everything,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “Elon is a very good team. They’re solid and they didn’t make a lot of errors. They forced us to make some errors and we just have to put more of our better plays together.”

Freshman Liz Martino finished with a game-high 17 assists. Sophomore Aleena McDaniel led A&T with eight kills and freshman Jillian Nobles added six. Sophomore Brooke Stamnes recorded eight digs.

Elon controlled the first two sets after cruising to considerable leads. But the Aggies returned in the third set and took a 6-5 edge over the Phoenix. An Elon point tied the game at six but kills from Stamnes and Nobles gave A&T an 8-6 advantage. The Phoenix scored two consecutive points to tie the game at 8, but the Aggies continued to push and used a kill from McDaniel to regain the lead. That was the last time A&T clung to its lead as Elon reclaimed the lead and held it to win the match.

The Aggies will host S.C. State on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., and Savannah State on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m., at Moore Gym in a pair of MEAC matches.

“We have to get the team refocused over the next few days as we head back into conference matches,” Clifton said. “We need to get physically and mentally rested for these next two matches in order to develop our game plan. We’re looking forward to a big and exciting crowd over the weekend.”
