GREENSBORO – Senior guard Lamont Middleton and sophomore forward Bruce Beckford were instrumental in helping the Aggies win the MEAC men’s basketball tournament title and NCAA first-round game. Voters comprised of MEAC sports information directors and head coaches recognized those contributions on Tuesday.
The MEAC released its preseason all-conference team and predicted order of finish with Middleton and Beckford earning second-team accolades. The Aggies, who came from the seventh seed to win the conference tournament, were picked to finish fifth.
Middleton (6-3, 205, Bronx, N.Y.) led the Aggies in scoring last season at 12.4 points per game. He scored 55 points during the four games of the MEAC tournament. He had 14 points and five rebounds in 34 minutes in the Aggies NCAA win over Liberty.
Beckford (6-7, 215, Silver Spring, Md.) had an outstanding freshman season. He was named the A&T athletics departments’ Male Rookie of the Year. He made 30 starts as a freshman and averaged 8.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 55 percent from the field. He had 16 points and was 8-for-10 from the floor against Liberty. He had 12 points and was 4-for-7 from the floor in A&T’s NCAA loss to eventual champion Louisville.
The Aggies play their final exhibition game 7 p.m., Wednesday at Corbett Sports Center. Their regular-season opener is Friday night against Greensboro College at Corbett. Tip is at 7 p.m.
