GREENSBORO – Seventeenth-ranked North Carolina A&T opened the 300 Music City Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt on Friday in Smyrna, Tenn., where it finished with a 3-3 mark in six quad baker matches.
The Aggies (68-25 overall) are in 14th place out of a strong field of 29 teams, including several nationally ranked programs. A&T compiled a pinfall of 4.382 on Friday.
A&T started the day off by dropping a 791-721 match to No. 8 Vanderbilt who is second in the tournament (4,869). The Aggies went on to win three straight, starting with a 713-699 victory over No. 14 Valparaiso.
A&T defeated No. 10 Sam Houston State, 789-653 where it averaged a 197.25 and pinned a game-high 239. The Aggies got their final win over UAB, a 710-672 decision. In its last two games, A&T fell 766-755 to No. 5 Central Missouri and 794-624 to No. 15 McKendree.
Saturday’s competition will feature six traditional team games beginning at 9 a.m.
