LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (March 8, 2017) – North Carolina A&T men’s tennis played three matches over spring break. N.C. A&T head coach William Crutchfield was looking for a way to get his team more matches with MEAC play and the MEAC tournament approaching.

The least expensive way was to be able to get three competitions in one location, in this case, Georgia. N.C. A&T went 0-3 during the week with a close 4-3 loss to Savannah College of Arts & Design on March 5 before they were defeated 5-2 by Olivet Nazarene on March 6. They closed out their spring break tests 7-0 to the No. 1 team in NAIA, Georgia Gwinnett. The Grizzlies have three players who rank in the top-50 nationally in NAIA.

Against SCAD, the Aggies had three singles victories as Adair Bartra continued his solid play and even went above .500 on the season at the time with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nick Runac at No. 5 singles. Niko Barr got his first win of the season as he had an extended match with Marcel Du Sart at No. 3 singles. Barr finally boasted a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 win. John Wilson IV got his first win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chandler Saunders.

SCAD did take the doubles point to make the difference in the match, winning 2 of 3. N.C. A&T’s only win in doubles came thanks to Dreshaun Jarmon and Brett Caban. They teamed to defeat Runac and Jonah Tewes-McCoy 9-7.

The next day against ONU, the Aggies received two more singles wins. Bartra won again to take the team-lead in wins with four. Bartra won at No. 3 singles 6-0, 7-6 over Alfonso Martinez. Wilson won his second straight singles match to improve to 2-0 as a No. 2 singles player with a 6-4, 7-6 (10-2) win over Grant Esposito. There was another Aggies victory as the Aggies won a doubles match as Arduh and Bartra defeated Martinez and Oscar Mancineiras 9-8.

ONU, however, did take the doubles point by winning the other two matches. N.C. A&T had a chance to take the match. Caban had a tough contest against Juan Lopez-Isasi at No. 4 singles and Jordan Lawrence lost a close one to Tyler Cannon at No. 5, 6-7, 6-4 (10-6).

The week ended with the loss to the Grizzlies who improved to 14-0 on the season. The Grizzlies showed off their talent throughout the match as they swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches. Arduh and Barr did battle against Kevin Konfederak and Gilad Berman to an 8-4 defeat.

N.C. A&T returns to action 1 p.m., Thursday as they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to face Gardner-Webb.
