SMYRNA, Tenn. (March 19, 2017) – North Carolina A&T bowling finished the Columbia 300 Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt in 16th place with a 7-5 overall record in the tournament.  In one of the most competitive tournaments this season, the Aggies went up against 19 other top-20 ranked programs in the country in the 32-team field.

Individually, N.C. A&T was led by freshman Tyra Merritt, who finished 13th overall with a 203.40 average.  She was followed closely by senior MacKenzie Robinson at 202.80, enough to place 14th.

As a team, the Aggies finished with a 182.0 average, recording a 12,030 total pin fall for the weekend. They opened the final day against Monmouth in the first round, narrowly defeating the Hawks 1,154-1,121 in six games, aided largely by their highest scoring game of the day, a 221 in Game 2. N.C. A&T moved on to face St. Francis University in the second round, but came up short 1,172-1,142.  In the final position round of the championship bracket, N.C. A&T played four games against Monmouth, but were not as successful as previously. The Hawks defeated the Aggies 813-672 to put N.C. A&T in 16th.

The Aggies were undefeated in traditional matches. The Aggies started traditional play with a 922-840 win over Valparaiso. Merritt was big in the win as she bowled a season-high 245. She was vital because no other Aggie got into the 180’s during the match. The Aggies defeat of Jackson State, 921-885 included a 236 from Robison and Mia Pope stepped up with a 192. Merritt was excellent again in the Aggies win over Central Missouri 962-852. She bowled a 224 while Robinson continued her strong play of late with a 221. The Aggies closed traditional play with a 934-874 victory over Maryville as Merritt’s 202 and Robinson’s 218 led the way.

In Baker competition, N.C. A&T grabbed a 923-912 win over Youngstown State in the second match of the day and moved on to defeat Wisconsin-Whitewater 1,009-989 in the following match.  However, Sam Houston State beat the Aggies to drop them to 2-2 in Baker play before N.C. A&T closed out with a loss to Texas Southern 908-862.

A strong showing in the Columbia 300 Music City Classic bodes well for N.C. A&T moving forward as they enter the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament as the Southern Division regular-season champions in Chesapeake, Va. on March 24-26.
