GREENSBORO (April 9, 2017) – Florida A&M posted two runs in their final at-bat on Sunday to beat the North Carolina A&T softball team 2-0 in what was a heartbreaking loss for the Aggies at the Aggies Softball Complex.

The Aggies played near flawless defense and were spectacular from the circle through six innings as Zadaisha Waddell threw for six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, while scattering seven hits. She also posted two strikeouts and two walks. Mohagony Headen came in as relief in seventh, pitching the inning without allowing a hit.  At the plate, designated hitter Alexandria Simmons led the way with two hits.

As in the first two games of the series, Florida A&M scored their runs late. A leadoff single from Whitney Farris kicked off the inning for the Rattlers as she earned an infield single despite a great effort from Jillian Nobles at third. After Farris advanced on a wild pitch, Waddell walked Jamesia Stoudemire to put runners on first and second. A single from Tahlia Snider drove home Farris for the first run of the game. On the throw home to get Farris, Stoudemire and Snider advanced to third and second. Headen replaced Waddell in the circle and promptly struck out Amber Fullwood for the first out of the inning. Headen, however, tossed a wild pitch with Tahlia Snider standing in the batter’s box. The pitch allowed Stoudemire to score for a 2-0 FAMU lead.

The Aggies (10-24-1, 3-6 MEAC) did not back down from the Rattlers in the bottom of the seventh. Simmons singled to right center off reliever Kenya Pereira who entered the game at the outset of the seventh. Nobles recorded the second out of the inning, however, with a fly out to center. Alyssa Green represented the tying run when she singled to left. Talisha Jenkins, representing the go-ahead run, grounded out to end the game.

Waddell (6-10) took the loss while Snider (6-2), FAMU’s starter, got the win. Waddell was brilliant early, retiring six of the first seven batters she faced. She helped the Aggies get out of a bases-loaded snag in the top of the third by getting Fullwood to hit into a fielder’s choice.

N.C. A&T earned their first hit of the contest in their half of third as Nobles singled to center field and eventually advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Green and a stolen base. However, with two outs, a swinging strikeout from Zadia Davis ended the inning. The Aggies managed to get five more runners on base throughout the game, never being able to capitalize with a run.

The Aggies (10-24-1, 3-6 MEAC) have a break in conference play before hosting Savannah State, April 22-23. N.C. A&T will travel to Western Carolina for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 13 before playing at Campbell April 19.
