Volleyball Sweeps Delaware State In Home Opener
GREENSBORO (September 1, 2017) – N.C. A&T volleyball swept Delaware State University 3-0 (25-23, 12, 20) in their home opener Friday night in Moore Gymnasium. Freshman Edie Brewer shined for the Aggies with a match-high 23 assists with four service aces.
Brewer’s assists led to 36 total kills for N.C. A&T. Senior Alyssa Pitt tallied a team-high nine kills while senior Jasmine Lindor added eight kills. Defensively, freshman Milanna Morgan and sophomore Christa Wilson both had double-figure digs with 13 and 10, respectively.
“We played with a ton of excitement and energy. The crowd was into it which propelled our team over the top,” said N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton. “We were on the road to begin the season and lost a heartbreaker. Everyone was excited to be home and the Aggies showed it tonight.”
The Aggies hosted (3-2) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Delaware State (0-4) in the non-conference contest to open the 2017 Spartan-Aggie Invitational. In an exciting opening set, N.C.A&T’s Pitt and Brewer led the Aggies to a come-from-behind win. The duo collected three kills each while senior Samara Brown carried the defensive load with five digs. The Aggies trailed 23-21, but rallied in the closing moments with a great defensive stand. DSU committed a pair of attack errors to tie things up at 23. But Pitt’s third kill of the set gave the Aggies a 24-23 advantage. N.C. A&T clinched the first set thanks to a DSU attack error.

“I encouraged the team to stay calm and collective during the first set,” said Clifton. “When it came down to those last six points they executed really well and we were able to pull the set out. I am really proud.”
The Aggies held the Hornets to only four total kills and a -.182 hitting percentage in the second set to cruise to a 2-0 lead. Brown picked up her offense with four kills and senior Jasmine Lindor also pitched in on the attack with four kills. N.C. exploded in the second, posting five service aces. Brewer recorded three aces, while Brown and sophomore Christa Wilson had one apiece.
In the third set, the Aggies finished with a match-high 13 kills to secure their first home victory of the season. Pitt had five kills as the Aggies settled in offensively, committing only five errors.
“Our servers all across the board did a fantastic job keeping DSU off balance which made it easier for us to defend in transition,” said Clifton. The Aggies finished with seven service aces led by Brewer’s four.
The Aggies will continue play in the e Spartan-Aggie Invitational on Saturday with an 11 a.m., match up against crosstown foe UNC Greensboro at Moore Gym. Later in the day, the invitational will conclude with N.C. A&T hosting Presbyterian at Moore Gym at 7 p.m.
