Spartans Beat Aggies at Spartan-Aggie Invite
GREENSBORO (September 2, 2017) – North Carolina A&T volleyball fell short to UNCG 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14) Saturday morning in Moore Gymnasium in their second match of the Spartan-Aggie Invitational. The Aggies set a season-high mark with 65 digs while freshman Edie Brewer and senior Samara Brown notched double-doubles.
Brown posted her second double-double of the season and the 13th of her career with 11 kills and 15 digs. Brown anchored the attack in the third set with six kills leading the Aggies to victory.
“Samara really got back into her groove of hitting which we were waiting to see,” said N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton. “She is a really solid attacker and today did not try to outdo herself. She just played, hit smart shots and scored which we really need out of her as a senior.”
Freshman Edie Brewer recorded her first career double-double pacing the Aggies with 23 assists and a season-high 13 digs. At the net, N.C. A&T (3-3) recorded their second highest total of the season with 10 blocks. Senior Jasmine Lindor was a force, tying her career high with eight total blocks while senior Alyssa Pitt added six total blocks. Freshman Milanna Morgan had a season-best 15 digs leading the Aggies defensively. Sophomore Christa Wilson garnered 12 digs as four Aggies finished with double-figure digs.
The teams went back-and-forth early in the opening set until UNCG scored four straight points to pull ahead 14-9. Pitt recorded a pair of kills to bring N.C. A&T closer, but the Spartans had their best offensive attack of the match posting a .286 attack percentage. Lindor paced N.C. A&T’s offensive attack with three kills to go along with two blocks. N.C. A&T fell victim to seven errors in the opening set compared to only four by UNCG.
The Spartans matched their 14 kills from set one and jumped ahead 23-15 in the second. Brown connected on a kill followed by a service ace by freshman Carden Clark as N.C. A&T started to trim the UNCG advantage to 23-19. In the final moments, N.C. A&T made it 24-22 after Pitt’s kill and a pair of attack errors by UNCG. But the Aggies defense gave up the final point as the Spartans took a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, N.C. A&T exploded for 16 kills behind six mega attacks from Brown. The Aggies did a great job of holding the Spartans to an .161 attack percentage while posting .316 of their own. The duo of Pitt and Lindor combined for eight blocks in the set as the Aggies dominated winning, 25-21.
The Spartans (4-2) managed to close out match in the fourth set as the Aggies made nine errors, while UNCG posted 14 kills for the third time in the match. Freshman Courteney Pitt paced the Aggie offense with a pair of kills and Brown led defensively with four digs as UNCG claimed the match victory.
UNCG’s Ashley Muench finished with a match-high 14 kills and had 14 digs. Allison Penner collected 30 assists with 13 digs and Christina Gregory had 18 digs.
“We competed really well at times and that is what we talk about”, Clifton said. “We were right there in sets two and three but in set one we struggled at first. Once we gained some confidence we really competed against UNCG. They’re a solid team top to bottom, but we hung with them. A few things did not fall our way, but we executed well.”
