GREENSBORO (November 13, 2017) – Elon shot 90 percent in the first quarter and 52.6 percent in the second quarter. As a result, the Phoenix never really allowed the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team to gather themselves in a 90-59 win at Corbett Sports Center Monday night.

The Phoenix shot 56.1 percent for the game, while the Aggies never really got going offensively until the fourth quarter when they were 10-for-22 from the floor (.455). By that time, Elon was in full control of the game. The Phoenix (2-0) missed their first shot of the game before proceeding to hit their next 10, which carried over into the second quarter.

When the Phoenix came out of their hot streak, they had a 30-12 lead. After Shay Burnett missed a jump shot to end the streak, Lexi Mercer got Elon going again with a 3-pointer to push the lead to 21. Elon led by as many as 31 in the first half and went into the locker room with a 55-26 lead. The Phoenix shot 65.5 percent from the floor in the first half as compared to the Aggies 29.2 percent.

N.C. A&T (1-1) was going up against no slouch on Monday, however. The Phoenix are the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions who went 27-7 overall and 16-2 in the league in 2016-17. They opened the 2017-18 season with a dominating 98-37 win over Winthrop. Elon shot 54.1 percent in that game with Burnett scoring 17 points. Monday night, Burnett led five Phoenix in double figures with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Malaya Johnson added 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting.

Sophomore C’Coriea Foy has reached double figures in each of her first two games as an Aggie. Foy finished with 16 points and four rebounds and has 31 points over the first two games of the season. Sophomore Cinia McCoy also reached double figures for the second straight game as she ended the night with 11 points and three assists. Senior Kala Green was the other Aggie in double figures with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

After two straight games at home the Aggies will hit the road for the first time in 2017-18 as they travel to Auburn, Ala., to face a Power Five school in the Auburn Tigers. Tip-off is 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16 at Auburn Arena.
