GREENSBORO (February 2, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team dropped to 0-4 after a 6-1 loss to Western Carolina Sunday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. Senior Khalia Powell captured her first singles win of the season, while the doubles team of Sheyla Ramirez and Renata Rabadan won at No. 1 doubles.

Powell, who has been an exceptional talent for the Aggies over her four-year career, secured her 15th career singles win with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Jordyn King at the No. 2 singles position. King made a push at the end of the second set, but Powell withstood the rally with some percise shots of her own to claim victory.

Sophomore Kanishka Chawla fell 6-1 in the first set to Carli Deehr, but turned up her intensity level and was able to take the second set 6-3. Chawla and Deehr battled over a 10-point tiebreaker set because of time constraints in which Chawla was defeated 10-0 at No. 6 singles. After losing the first set, junior Angelica Martinez come out hot in the second to take an early lead. She was, however, unable to hold on as she fell to Lauren McCall 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

In the No. 1 doubles position,  Rameriz and Ruiz teamed up to get their first doubles win as a part. They defeated Jordan Strickland and Savannah Taranto 6-3. The Aggies were unable to capture the doubles point, however, as the Catamounts won the other two matches.

The Aggies will travel to Conway, S.C., for a 4:30 p.m., match against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 17.
