GREENSBORO (March 2, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T softball team lost two games on Friday, the opening day of the Bruin Classic hosted by Belmont University. The Aggies lost to the host Bruins 5-0 before losing to Northern Iowa, 5-4 later in the day at E.S. Rose Park.
The Aggies dropped to 2-10 on the season as junior Mohagony Headen led the Aggies in the first game by going 2-for-3. The Aggies went 13 innings without scoring on Friday until they put one across the plate in the seventh inning against the Northern Iowa Panthers.
It was the Aggies best offensive inning of the day. Senior Nathaly Pacheco led off the inning against the Panthers with a single up the middle. Senior Talisha Jenkins came into the game to pinch run for Pacheco before senior Raven Gray struck out for the first out of the inning. Headen then popped out before junior Zadaisha Waddell singled to put runners on first and second with two outs.
Sophomore Alyssa Green then singled to load the bases for sophomore Stephanie Williams. Williams delivered the first run of the day when Brooke Craig hit Williams with a pitch to force in the run from third as Jenkins scored. The game ended when freshman Azaria Isbell hit into a fielder’s choice. Freshman Hailee Cutts took the loss despite going five innings and surrendering only four runs.
Cutts (0-3) was strong in the circle as the Panthers had to scratch across runs in the first and the fourth. Brittney Roby opened the game for the Panthers with a single followed by an infield single Sammey Bunch. Bunch was eliminated from the base paths when Kennedy Bailey hit into a fielder’s choice. Roby went to third.
Adara Opiola also hit into a fielder’s choice. Bailey was thrown out at second but the throw home to get Roby was too late to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. The Panthers added to their lead in the fourth as a walk and a single led to the Panthers having runners on third and second. A groundout to short led to NIU taking a 2-0 lead. NIU finally got a run with the ball leaving the infield in the fifth as an RBI double gave them a 3-0 lead. An RBI groundout in the same inning put the Panthers ahead by four runs.
In the loss to Belmont, Headen (1-3) took the loss after striking out four. The Aggies will continue play in the Bruin Classic on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m., game against Belmont and a 4:45 p.m., game against the Butler Bulldogs. The final game of the classic for the Aggies is Sunday morning at 9.
