GREENSBORO (March 4, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team will head south for spring break to compete in the Georgia Gwinnett’s Grizzly Spring Break Invitational in Lawrenceville, Ga.
The Aggies (0-9) head into spring break seeking their first win of the season. Going into the spring break invite, sophomore Adair Bartra has taken over the No. 1 singles position while previous No. 1 Nicolas Arduh recovers from an injory. Bartra has played at the No. 1 two previous times this season including against nationally-ranked North Carolina, the No. 6 team in the nation. He came close to an upset, taking the match to a third-set tiebreaker before losing the contest.
The Aggies first matchup will be on March 6 at 9 a.m. against Olivet Nazarene. The Tigers are 0-3 on the season but came extremely close to secure their first win of the season during their last match against Illinois Tech. They came up short, falling to the Hawks 5-4 as they counted each doubles match as a match. Junior Alfonso Martinez has been the Tigers shining star thus far this season as he is undefeated in No. 1 singles and doubles.
N.C. A&T will then face-off against tournament-host Georgia Gwinnett on March 7 at 10 a.m. The Grizzlies are 9-0 this season. Not only are the Grizzlies undefeated, they have amazingly not even lost an individual or doubles match within a tennis match this season. They are 50-0 in singles and 30-0 in doubles matches.
Spring Break play concludes on March 8 as the Aggies take on the Cardinal Stritch Wolves 9 a.m., Thursday. The Wolves are 4-2 on the season, and they are coming off a huge 8-1 win over South Dakota State.
