Wheeler Breaks School Record at HPU VertKlasse meet
HIGH POINT (April 6, 2018) – North Carolina A&T State track and field sent half their squad to nearby High Point University for the VertKlasse Meeting on Friday at Dick Vert Stadium. In the men’s hammer throw redshirt sophomore Derrick Wheeler broke his own school record tossing the hammer 168-feet, 11-inches to place third.
In the discus, Wheeler posted a personal-record 134-feet, 4-inches to finish 10th. The other Aggie thrower, freshman Aaron Wilkerson was the runner-up in the shot put notching a personal-record 51-feet, 1-inch. Wheeler placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 46-feet, 4 ¼ inches.
Junior Hakeem Mustafaa placed eighth in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at 10:15.74. Senior Aaron Deane ran a personal-best 11.51 in the 100 meters and was 12th in the 110-meter hurdles running 15.84.
N.C. A&T women two personal records while another two placed in the top-10 of their respective events. The top finishers for the Aggie women were senior Morgan Knight placing fifth in the pole vault (12-feet) while freshman Loren James was fourth in the shot put (43-feet, 7 ¾ inches) and ninth in the discus (131-feet, 1-inch).
In the 1500m, senior Miranda Green (4:58.92) was 20th to finish just ahead of sophomore Camille Martin who ran a personal-best 4:59.79 to place 21st. Sophomore Jade Smith eclipsed her previous PR in the 200 with a time of 26.27 to finish 21st. Smith also ran in the 100-meter hurdles (15.42) placing 13th and was 15th in the high jump at 4-feet, 9 ½ inches.
The Aggies will compete at home for the first time in 2018 when they host the Aggie Invitational on April 13-14 at Irwin Belk Track.
