GREENSBORO (May 4, 2018) – North Carolina A&T men’s track and field won the men’s hammer and was the runner-up in the men’s shot put after the second day of the 2018 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at N.C. A&T’s Irwin Belk Track. The Aggies had 15 qualify for Saturday’s finals and 10 garnered personal records.
After eight events scored the Aggies have 35 points to rank fourth behind Bethune-Cookman (78), Hampton (46) and Morgan State (40). The final day of the 2018 MEAC Outdoor Championships will be aired live on ESPN 3 Saturday at 1 p.m.
Junior Derrick Wheeler won the men’s hammer after placing second in 2017. Wheeler took gold measuring a personal-best 173-feet, 7-inches on his fifth attempt. Freshman Aaron Wilkerson took silver in the men’s shot put with a toss of 51-feet, 10 ½-inches. Wheeler placed sixth in the shot put at 47-feet, 11 ¼-inches to score for the Aggies.
Four Aggies advanced in the 110m hurdles prelims paced by junior Michael Dickson’s personal record. Dickson ran the fastest prelim time and remains on top of the MEAC list with a time of 13.54. Senior Todd Townsend (13.91) finished third and Robert Miller (13.95) finished fourth with a personal-best 13.95. TeQuille Jackson (14.33) came in eighth to round out the 110mh qualifiers.
In the 400m prelims, freshman Trevor Stewart and junior Justin Hamilton advanced to the finals by running personal bests. Stewart finished second in 45.63 while Hamilton placed fifth in 46.42. In the 800 prelims, another pair of Aggies posted personal records. Corey Aiken was fourth by running a 1:51.22 and Steve Stowe was seventh with a time of 1:53.15.
Junior Rodney Rowe (10.30), Joel Thomas (10.32) and Michael Bell (10.46) all advanced in the 100m prelims. Rowe was fifth, Thomas was sixth after running a season-best and Bell was eighth in personal-record time.
N.C. A&T claimed four spots in the men’s 200m finals on Thursday.
Rowe was the top Aggie finisher running 20.58 to rank second in the prelims. Dickson (20.83) was fifth and Hamilton (20.98) was seventh. Each athlete set personal records. Stewart (21.01) occupied the final by finishing eighth.
In the 400mh prelims, freshman Chase Bonham finished fourth with a personal-best 52.47. In the men’s high jump, senior Nehemiah Lipford finished fifth by measuring 6-feet, 9-inches.
The final day of the 2018 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is Saturday at N.C. A&T’s Irwin Belk Track. The Aggie women along with the men are trying to make N.C. A&T the first MEAC school to win back-to-back MEAC titles in men’s and women’s indoor and men’s and women’s outdoor.
