4 D'Vonte Grant

Comes into the season as a candidate for MEAC Defensive Player of the Year…Despite his stature, Grant has made himself into one of the best linebackers in the MEAC…Has led the Aggies in tackles in each of the first three years he has played…Has played in and started 33 straight games…Had a breakout season in which he earned a spot on the Jerry Rice Watch List for best freshman in the FCS…Head coach Rod Broadway said he was pleasantly surprised at how productive Grant was for a player his size…On 13 occasions, Grant has recorded double-figure tackles…Uses his quickness and agility to make plays on the football…Has four career defensive touchdowns (3 interceptions, 1 fumble return), which is a school record…Also makes plays on special teams by blocking kicks…Has more career tackles than any other Aggie on the roster with 277 (154 solo, 123 assisted)…His six-career interceptions have been returned for 185 yards and three  touchdowns…Also during his career, he has made 27 tackles for loss (80 yards lost), 3.5 sacks and defended 15 passes…He is a hard worker in the weight room and has excellent strength for a player his size…During the spring  he bench pressed 305, power cleaned 320 and squatted 455 pounds…Can bench press 225 13 times and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds …He is a two-time All-MEAC second-team selection and has earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice…Was named the North Carolina A&T athletics department’s Male Rookie of the Year in 2011.

2013 Season: Started all 11 games…Made 58 solo tackles and 44 assisted tackles for a team-high 102…Was one of only eight players to start all 11 games…Earned second-team All-MEAC honors at season’s end…Made 10.0 tackles for loss resulted in 32 negative yardage for opponents…Also made three interceptions, had nine pass defenses, four fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, three quarterback hurries and a half sack…Tied for the conference lead in fumble recoveries…Ranked seventh in the conference in tackles per game (9.3) and was tied for 11th in passes defended per game (0.82)…Ranked third nationally in fumble recoveries, 10th in blocked kicks and 27th in solo tackles and 38th in total tackles…Scored two defensive touchdowns during the season, including a 57-yard interception return in the Aggies 24-21 upset win at Appalachian State on Sept. 7…Also made eight tackles in the game with a blocked kick, tackle for loss and a pass breakup…Made a career-high 13 tackles, had an interception and returned a fumble 20 yards in the Aggies 28-0 win over archrival N.C. Central on Nov. 23…Recorded 12 tackles, three for loss, and blocked a kick in the Aggies 27-19 win over Howard in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU…Made 10 solo tackles and one assisted tackles, including three tackles for loss and two pass breakups in the Aggies 20-13 overtime win at Florida A&M on Oct. 26.

 

2012 Season: Started all 11 games…Made 43 solo tackles and 45 assisted tackles for a team-high 88… Was one of seven players on the team to start all 11 games…Earned second-team All-MEAC honors at season’s end…Made 6.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for 22 yards lost…Also had 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, four passes defended, a blocked kick and a quarterback hurry…Returned both of his interceptions for touchdowns…Ranked ninth in the MEAC and 94th in the nation in tackles per game (8.0)…Led the team in total tackles for the second straight season….Led all Aggie linebackers in passes defended…Made 15 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in a loss at Coastal Carolina on Sept. 1…Had 13 tackles in a loss at Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 6…Returned an interception by Howard quarterback Greg McGhee 40 yards for a touchdown as the Aggies defeated Howard 38-10 on Oct. 13…All seven of his tackles were solo in the Aggies’ 30-9 win over Norfolk State on Oct. 27… Scored the only touchdown of the game, a 35-yard interception return in a 16-3 win over Florida A&M at Aggie Stadium on Nov. 3…On Nov. 5, earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts against the Rattlers…The Rattlers win secured the Aggies first winning season in nine years…Made 11 tackles, broke up a pass and blocked a kick in a 22-16 overtime win over N.C. Central on Nov. 17.

2011 Season: Started all 11 games…Recorded 53 solo and 34 assisted tackles for a total of 87…His 10.5 tackles for loss ranked him second on the team…Ranked 11th in the conference in tackles and was tied for 18th in tackles for loss…After making 11 tackles at Appalachian State on Sept. 10, Grant earned a spot on the Jerry Rice Watch List for best Rookie in Division I FCS…Became a finalist on the list when he made 17 tackles at Norfolk State on Oct. 29…Made 3.5 of his 17 tackles against Norfolk State behind the line of scrimmage…Made six tackles and had his only interception of the season in a 42-24 win over Delaware State on Oct. 15…Grant’s 28-yard interception return set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lewis Kindle to Larry Raper.
