GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T sprinter Desmond Lawrence is one step away from NCAA nationals. Lawrence qualified for the 100 meter quarterfinals on Thursday during the first day of the NCAA East Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Round held at A&T’s Irwin Belk Track.

Lawrence ran in his heat in 10.35, marking the third straight race he has reached a personal best. He ran a 10.56 at Penn Relays in April, a 10.42 at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May and at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, he took seven-tenths of a second off of his best time.

Lawrence will try to advance to the NCAA Nationals, held in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8. The other Aggie in action on Thursday was sophomore Christian Harrison. Harrison finished in 1:50.84 in the sixth heat of the 800 meters. Despite having a faster time than two qualifying runners in the fifth heat, Harrison failed to qualify. Qualifiers must finish in the top three of their respective heat and the top six fastest times.

The Aggies have two more competitors for the weekend. Nakita Gray will compete on Friday at 6 p.m., in the women’s high jump. Keenan Smith will compete Saturday afternoon at 1 in the men’s triple jump.
