RADFORD, Va. – Sophomore Aleena McDaniel recorded nine kills, seven digs and had five total blocks in what was the Aggies most competitive match of the Radford Invitational over the weekend. Despite McDaniel’s performance, the Aggies lost to Eastern Kentucky in three sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-18) in their second match on Saturday at the Dedmon Center.

The Aggies lost to Kennesaw State in three sets earlier in the day, 25-12, 25-12, 25-18. McDaniel had eight kills and 10 digs in the loss to KSU, helping her earn all-tournament honors.

Against the Colonels, a Te’Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth and McDaniel block gave the Aggies a 14-10 lead. That lead grew to six at 19-13 when McDaniel and freshman Jillian Nobles combined for a block of Johanna Boyer attack. But the Colonels scored the next three points to force A&T head coach Hal Clifton to call timeout. Out of the timeout, a ball handling error by freshman setter Liz Martino brought the Colonels to within two.

An attack error by Boyer broke up the Colonels run, but a few moments later, Ashley Edmond tied the match for EKU on a kill. When Aggies sophomore Brooke Stamnes committed an attack error, it gave the Colonels a 22-21 lead. They never trailed again in the set.

The Aggies were within two, 17-15, in the third set. But the Colonels scored the next three points to take control of the match.

A&T will try to pick up its first win of the season on Tuesday, when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop at 7 p.m.
