GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T State volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-21, 21, 14) setback to the hands of crosstown rival UNC Greensboro at the Aggie-Spartan Invitational presented by Ashford Suites Saturday afternoon in Moore Gymnasium.

Although the Aggies (1-5) dropped the first two sets they performed competitively and maintained consistentcy until the Spartans (3-2) opened up the third set on a 10-1 run.

“We got down early and you could see our faces drop in the third set,” head volleyball coach Hal Clifton said. “We have to find a way to keep our composure and maintain a positive attitude. We can’t let one little thing get us down. We lost to a very good team. We had moments of great play but made too many unforced errors.”

After a few lead changes in the first set, Brooke Stamnes helped tie the game at 16 with a kill. The Spartans regained control and led the Aggies 21-17. However, a pair of errors from UNCG would help A&T get within two points. Kills from Stamnes and Jade Boone helped the Aggies close in on the Spartans 22-21, but UNCG scored three straight points to win the set.

In the second set, the Aggies led for most of the game. After taking a 16-13 advantage, the Spartans tallied three consecutive points to tie the game. A&T never recovered its lead as UNCG took a 24-19 advantage. Despite two straight points from the Aggies, UNCG was able to close out the set.

Stamnes finished with a match-high 12 kills in route to her second consecutive match in double-digit kills. Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth and Aleena McDaniel each added six kills for the Aggies.

A&T will wrap-up the invitational at 4 p.m., when it hosts Murray State at Moore Gymnasium.
