GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T freshman punter Dominic Frescura didn’t do too bad for a player who just arrived to A&T.
Frescura (6-2, 190, South Pasadena, Calif.) punted nine times for a single-game school record 424 yards to help the Aggies upset No. 21 Appalachian State 24-21 Saturday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium. For his efforts, Frescura was named The Sports Network National Special Teams Player of the Week. Frescura also picked up MEAC Rookie of the Week honors from the conference, while senior D’Vonte Grant (5-10, 208, Charlotte) picked MEAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Frescura pinned the Mountaineers inside their own 20-yard line five times on Saturday. Four of his punts forced the Mountaineers to start their drive inside their own 5. The Aggies signed Frescura after their initial target at punter decided to attend another school. Broadway said he and his coaching staff unturned every stone until they found the California native during the heat of training camp.
Grant also made team history on Saturday. Grant returned a second-quarter interception 57 yards for a touchdown that gave A&T a 21-6 halftime lead. The pick 6 was the third of Grant’s career, tying a school record set by Curtis Deloatch, who played at A&T from 2001-03. Grant also made eight tackles, broke up a pass and had a tackle for loss.
The Aggies (1-0) return to Greensboro to play their home opener Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m., versus the Elon Phoenix. For tickets call (336) 334-7749.
