Tough Triad Competition Awaits A&T At Elon Invite
GREENSBORO -- The North Carolina A&T cross country teams will return to Elon for their annual competition at the Elon Invitational this Saturday. The women will compete in a 5k race and the men an 8k at 9 a.m., from the Elon Trail.
Last year the women and men placed third overall at the Elon Invitational. Sophomore Janay Ferrell ran second for the women and 16th overall, running a time of 21:27. Junior Saeed Jones finished 15th overall and first for the men at a time of 28:35 in the 8k run. Junior Christian Harrison finished 16th behind Jones at a time of 29:42. Sophomore Neegbeah Reeves took 19th place and was fifth for the men at a time of 34:44.
Last weekend, the Aggies competed in Durham, N.C., at the NCCU Invitational. Jones led the men to a first-place finish by finishing first individually in 21:22.41. Redshirt senior Janessa Benn finished first for the women, but placed second overall in 23:33.79.
“I expect a very competitive competition,” said coach Duane Ross. “I think our men are definitely ready, I think our women have been getting better meet by meet which is what our plan was this year so I expect big things, a lot of personal best.”
UNC Greensboro and Elon will be the Aggies toughest competitors this weekend. UNCG senior Chelsae Sumney won the women’s meet last year with a time of 17:44. Abraham Kemboi, a UNCG senior, won the meet for the men at a time of 25:29.
Even though UNCG had first place finishers on both sides, the Elon men’s and women’s teams won the competition.
