WILMINGTON – The North Carolina A&T volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to UNC Wilmington on Friday afternoon at Hanover Hall.

The Aggies (1-7) fell by scores of 25-14, 10 and 13 in the opening match of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic. The Seahawks improved to 5-2 overall.  Errors hindered the young Aggies early which allowed Wilmington to capitalize off their mistakes throughout the match.

“We had very good moments but mentally we missed some assignments,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We played a solid first set. UNCW is a strong team with lots of experienced players. We learned a few more things about our team and some more things we need to work on.”

After trailing 10-7 in the first set, A&T took advantage of a pair of Christi Laite errors to get within one. But the Seahawks’ momentum was just too much for A&T, as Wilmington continued to control the set.

In the second set, Wilmington jumped out to a 10-2 lead before Jillian Nobles handed down a kill for the Aggies. Down 20-7, A&T took advantage of three UNCW errors to cut the Seahawks lead to 20-10.

A UNCW service error tied the game at 5 in the third set, but the Seahawks went on a 13-5 run to take the 18-10 lead. After taking a sizeable lead, the Seahawks were able to close out the match.

Ashley Johnson recorded a match-high 12 digs to notch her fifth match this season in double-figure digs.

The Aggies will face Western Carolina at 10:30 a.m., and UNC Asheville at 5 p.m., in the final day of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic.
