GREENSBORO – Liz Martino was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball Rookie of the Week announced by the league office, Monday afternoon.
Martino, a 5-7 setter from Elmhurst, Ill., is the first Aggie to receive a MEAC weekly honor this season. She helped A&T to a 2-1 record last week with wins against S.C. State (3-1) and Savannah State (3-0). A&T dropped a 3-0 non-conference match to Elon on Tuesday.
She totaled 81 assists (8.10 avg./set) and 19 digs in three matches. She notched a career-high 44 assists. Her 10 digs also helped her record her first career double-double. Martino led all players with 17 assists against Elon and posted 20 in the win over Savannah State.
“This is exciting for Liz and we’re definitely happy for her,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “It’s exciting for our program. Liz has done a tremendous job. It’s difficult to come into any team as a freshman, especially a freshman setter. There’s a lot of pressure and she has to go through a lot of things other players don’t have to. She’s handled it very well and we’re excited about her performance.”
A&T will face Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for its Dig Pink match beginning at 7 p.m., at Moore Gymnasium.
