GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T bowling team won its season-opening tournament, the Hampton Roads Collegiate Bowling Invitational on Sunday afternoon after posting a 7-3 record during the two-day event.

Sunday’s format of the invitational featured five baker games.  After dropping a 4-2 decision to Monmouth in the fourth baker game, A&T’s young squad rebounded and downed Monmouth 4-0 in the championship game. After winning the invitational, sophomore Emily Strombeck and freshman MacKenzie Robinson were named to the all-tournament team.

The Aggies also defeated St. Francis 4-0, who is ranked 17th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) pre-season poll,  Bowie State 4-2, and Morgan State 4-0 on Sunday.

“Today was a total team effort,” head coach James Williams said. “They believed and supported each other all day. The field was tough and the lane conditions were just as tough. I'm extremely proud of the ladies because they showed a lot of character and a lot of resolve.”

The Aggies put up a strong performance on Saturday which put them in a great position for Sunday’s games.

On Saturday, A&T went 3-2 in five traditional games.  Strombeck led the Aggies with a 190.8 average on the day. Robinson also performed well in her collegiate debut with a 190.6 average through five games.

A&T took down No.11 Adelphi University 889-844. Robinson rolled a game-high 207 against Adelphi and Strombeck finished with 195. The Aggies also defeated Virginia State University 830-753 and MEAC foe Hampton, 939-586. Against the Pirates, Strombeck led with 223, followed by Robinson (216) and freshman Kristin Shinn (197).

A&T suffered its only two losses on Saturday to No. 12 Kutztown 949-843 and No. 15 Norfolk State 885-856.

“As young as we are all the girls had their moments when we really needed a big shot,” Williams said. “Whether it was a timely spare, a split conversation or a much needed strike someone made the shot. I’m extremely proud of the results and going 7-3 on opening weekend is great but we definitely have more work to do.”

A&T will host an Alumni vs. Underclassmen Challenge on Friday, Nov. 1 during Homecoming. The Aggies return back to action when they host the MEAC Conference Meet on Saturday, Nov. 9-10.
