GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T freshman running back Tarik Cohen (5-8, 170, Bunn, N.C.) was added to the Jerry Rice Watch List on Thursday. The Rice Award, now in its third season, honors the top first-year player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Only redshirt freshmen and freshmen are eligible.
Cohen earned his spot on the list thanks to a marvelous three-week stretch. He posted 299 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns at Hampton on Oct. 12. A week later in his first career start, he had 91 yards on 19 carries at home against Delaware State. Last week, he rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner in overtime, at Florida A&M. In the process, he broke the Aggies single-season freshman rushing record, previously held by Barry Turner at 556 yards in 1990.
Cohen has rushed for 610 yards and four touchdowns on the season. He also has six receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown. The Rice Award, named for the legendary wide receiver who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State, can undergo revisions during the season. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Award Presentation on Dec. 16 in Philadelphia.
