GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team will spend most of its 2014 season on the road as its schedule features just three home matches.
“We have 25 matches scheduled this spring,” interim head coach Bruce Myers said. “The past years the team has played 17, 15, and 14 so I felt as my first order of business as the new head coach was to put together a more competitive and stronger schedule than the team had played in the recent past. I wanted a schedule that better reflected a true Division I schedule with which we can grow the program to where it should be.”
The Aggies open the season on Jan. 18 against UNC Wilmington before hosting Wofford College and Appalachian State on Jan. 24 and 25 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro. A&T will face Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, and Pfeiffer University before returning back home to take on Norfolk State on Feb. 7 at Barber Park.
“Without the benefit of a true fall season I felt the best way for our players to bond as a cohesive unit was to test them in a lot of difficult matches starting right away,” said Myers. “This should benefit us greatly when we get into the heart of our conference play in mid-March.”
Conference action starts on March 7-10 as the Aggies will go against southern division teams S.C. State, Savannah State, Bethune-Cookman, and Florida A&M during the four-day stretch, in Florence, S.C. A&T and N.C. Central will meet in Durham on April 7. The Aggies will face George Mason and Coppin State on April 12 and will wrap-up the regular season on April 13 against Maryland Eastern Shore.
