Aggies Overview: A&T made tons of free throws Saturday night to defeat Florida A&M 84-78 at Corbett Sports Center. A&T made (44) and attempted (63) more free throws than any other Aggies team in school history. Lamont Middleton led the charge with a record-breaking 18 free throws on a program-best 21 attempts. The Aggies will try to sweep the home stand against Bethune-Cookman tonight. The Aggies are 7-4 against the Wildcats at Corbett since 2000. A&T may have to sweep the season series against the Wildcats without the services of Bruce Beckford. Beckford is trying to recover from a sprained ankle and could miss his second straight contests. In his place on Saturday, the Aggies went with Khary Doby who had a season-high six boards. Freshman center Steven Burrough also entered the starting lineup and responded with seven points, four rebounds and four blocks.
B-CU Overview: The Wildcats fire power has been depleted with the loss of Ricky Johnson. He has not played since Dec. 7. Malik Jackson and Mikel Trapp have tried to make up for some of the lost production offensively. Trapp leads the Wildcats in scoring at 11.4 points per game. He is averaging 11.6 points in conference play. Jackson, who scored 20 points against the Aggies in Daytona Beach in 2013, is averaging 10.8 points for the season and 11.1 in the conference. Jackson has scored in double figures in his last five games, including a 27-point outing against UMES. Trapp had a 33-point game on Feb. 3 against S.C. State. Gravelle Craig is in his third season with the Wildcats. He led them to the MEAC tournament final in his first year. He is 3-2 against A&T.
Potential Star: Steven Burrough played 27 solid minutes on Saturday. If he can repeat his performance of rebounding and blocking shots, he could have a big impact on tonight’s game.
News & Notes:
• A&T is looking for its first season sweep of Bethune-Cookman in 19 years. The last time the Aggies swept the Wildcats, they won 89-77 in Daytona Beach and 98-93 in overtime in Greensboro.
• The school record for free throws attempted in a season is 895 set during the 1970-71 season. The 2013-14 Aggies have attempted 714 free throws.
• It is important that the Aggies get to the free throw line more than their opponents. A&T is 0-12 this season when shooting fewer free throws than their opponents.
From the coach:
“We’re going to play the next seven games as if it was the first round of the MEAC tournament. We understand if you lose in the first round, you go home. We’re trying to play with a chip on our shoulders with a total tournament-like focus prior to getting to the tournament. That’s the psychology of what we’re trying to do as a team.
