BOILING SPRINGS – The North Carolina A&T softball team dropped a pair of games to Gardner-Webb, Thursday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Aggies fell 5-3 in the first game and 8-6 in the last game of the doubleheader.

“We had some timely hits but we didn’t adjust sooner,” head coach Kenya Peters said. “We rallied back towards the end of the second game but we have to work on fighting and finishing innings.”

After trailing 5-1 in the first game, the Aggies (3-6 overall) put up a pair of runs in the sixth inning courtesy of senior Sabrina Edmonds’  two-run homer to slice the Runnin’ Bulldogs (4-10) lead to 5-3. With two outs, freshman Dasia Moore singled down the left field line. Edmonds kept the inning going and blasted her second home run of the season on a 1-0 count over the left field fence to keep A&T in the game. However Gardner-Webb maintained its lead and kept A&T scoreless in the seventh to snap its three-game losing streak.

A&T finally got on the board in the fourth inning to cut the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ edge to 2-1. Senior Tiffany Macklin got a break when she reached first on a dropped third strike and stole second to the put the Aggies in scoring position. Moore moved Macklin to third with a single to left center field but it was Edmonds’ sac fly to left field that gave A&T its first run.

Gardner-Webb answered in the bottom of the fourth by using a two out rally to bring in a pair of runs. With runners on second and third, Samantha Meenaghan hit a two-run single up the middle to put GWU up 4-1.  After a quick three outs by the Aggies in the top of the fifth, Gardner-Webb took advantage of a triple from Jessica Childers followed by a sac fly to left field from Savannah Burns to score another run.

Moore led the Aggies with two hits, and an RBI as Edmonds finished with a game-high three RBI.

Senior pitcher Shelby Snyder recorded her second loss of the season and finished with one strikeout.

In the second game, A&T was down 8-1 until the fifth inning where it put together five hits to score four runs. The Aggies used singles from junior Zebresha Blakeney, sophomore Alejandra Barcenas, senior Haley Snyder, sophomore Janika May, and a double from senior Tranea Jones to trail GWU 8-5.

A&T’s defense kept the Runnin’ Bulldogs from scoring in the bottom of the fifth where they had bases loaded. The Aggies resurfaced again in the top of the seventh where Edmonds led off with a walk. H. Snyder reached on an error but would record the first out at second after Moore reached on a fielder’s choice.

GWU logged the next out but with runners on first and third, freshman Maiven McKnight loaded the bases after she was walked by pitcher Ashley Rhyne. A fielding error on the next play allowed A&T to score its final run as the Runnin’ Bulldogs closed the inning with a strikeout on the next batter.

Jones was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Barcenas also finished with two hits and a pair of runs. May threw four innings in the loss and finished with two strikeouts.

A&T will host crosstown rival UNCG on Wednesday, March 5 at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex starting at 3 p.m.
