A&T Drops Two Matches To UNCA and Presbyterian

GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend to Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville.

The Aggies (1-12 overall) fell 7-0 to both teams on the road.

Against UNC Asheville, Jayla Scott gave the Aggies their best performance in the No. 2 singles position but came up short 6-2, 6-3 to Ericka Rivero. Zoe Hamel, Gillian Lewis, and Caroline Sherrer swept the No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 matches against Kenya Colbert, Saundra Smith, and Kiana Washington. Christine Bossievain defeated Kimberly Stalling 6-1, 6-0 in the third spot and Lexxus Betts dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Hunter Hall in the fifth position.

Colbert and Smith faced Emily McNail and Bossievain in the No. 2 doubles match but were faced with an 8-2 setback. Scott and Stalling along with Betts and Washington were swept 8-0 by Hamel and Rivero along with Hall and Sherrer.

A&T put up a better fight against Presbyterian with the efforts of Scott and Stalling. PC used two first-set tiebreakers to notch victories in the second and third spots. At No. 2, Caroline deLoach took down Jayla Scott, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1. Lucia Leahy followed up at No. 3 by defeating Stalling, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

At No. 1 Colbert fell 6-2, 6-3 to Patricia Alves and Smith dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to Antonia Conze in the fourth spot. Kayla Stanford claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Betts and Lovey Sheppard swept Washington 6-0, 6-0 in the final match.

In doubles play, Stalling and Scott teamed together at the No. 1 spot but were defeated 8-4 by Greer Ransom and Courtney Gardiner. Stanford and Alves took down Smith and Colbert 8-0 in the No. 2 flight as deLoach and Leahy secured an 8-0 win over Betts and Washington.

The Aggies return back to action on Friday, March 21 when they face Salem College in Winston-Salem at 3 p.m.
