SAVANNAH, Ga. – Despite each team finishing with six hits each on Sunday, the North Carolina A&T softball team dropped a 9-7 decision at Savannah State, Sunday afternoon in a MEAC game at Tiger Softball Field.

In the first inning, A&T (14-19, 6-3) took the 1-0 lead after SSU pitcher Amanda McDowell intentionally walked senior Jax Kaye Woodard with the bases loaded. But the Aggies’ defense struggled early in the first inning as the Tigers (21-17, 5-4) took a 5-1 lead where they recorded four of their six hits.

Senior pitcher Shelby Snyder relieved freshman Maiven McKnight in the middle of the first inning as the Aggies answered on offense in the second. Senior Sabrina Edmonds who has been hitting well for A&T all season made the most of her at-bat with bases loaded as she crushed a grand slam, hitting her second homer of the series and seventh of the season. Freshman Charity Douglas kept the rally going with a solo home run over left field fence to give A&T the 6-5 lead.

Both teams went cold at the plate from that point on until Savannah State found its life again in the fifth inning. India Morgan got it going for the Tigers with an infield single and Amanda Hallman reached first after being hit by a pitch. Torrian Wright hit an RBI single to left field as Amanda Hallman scored on a wild pitch, moving Wright to third to tie the game at 7. An error by senior Dominique Smith in center field allowed Amber Hallman to reach third and score Wright. The Tigers scored their final run with a sacrifice fly from Meghan Urhman, pushing their advantage to 9-6.

A&T tried to respond in the sixth but the only run it was only able to drive in one run off Douglas’ double that scored Moore who reached on a single.

McDowell (12-6) clinched her second win over the Aggies and tallied a game-high 13 strikeouts. Snyder (2-8) tossed six innings and only gave up two hits in the loss.

The Aggies will host Bethune-Cookman in a MEAC series beginning on Friday, April  18 at 2 p.m., at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.
