GREENSBORO – Senior pitcher Shelby Snyder took care of things in the circle, while seniors Jax Kaye Woodard and Dominique Smith smashed back-to-back home runs in an 8-0 victory over N.C. Central, Sunday afternoon it its MEAC regular-season finale at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.

“Shelby pitched an excellent game,” head coach Kenya Peters said. “We finally were able to get over that hump of playing close games and winning by a run or so. We were solid on offense and defense today. That’s what we needed and hopefully we’ll take that momentum into next week.”

Peters is referring to the Aggies’ upcoming appearance in the MEAC tournament beginning on May 8 in Ormond Beach, Fla. With their win yesterday over NCCU (9-35, 4-10) the Aggies (16-26, 8-7) clinched the fourth seed in the MEAC southern division.

Snyder’s (3-12) flawless performance on Sunday held the Eagles to just two hits as she recorded two strikeouts in five innings of play.

Woodard and Smith were the answer for A&T in the second inning. Seniors Sabrina Edmonds and Tranea Jones reached on a single and error respectively, which set up Woodard who belted her 24th career home run on the first pitch to send the ball sailing down the left field line. An encore performance followed in the next at-bat at the hands of Smith, who also crushed the first pitch over the right-field fence which gave A&T the 4-0 lead.

The Aggies posted four more runs in the third inning to take the 8-0 advantage. With bases loaded and one out, Woodard drew a walk which pushed A&T’s lead to 5-0. NCCU recorded the second out on the next at-bat, however, that didn’t stop senior Tiffany Macklin who drove in two more runs with a single up the middle with the bases loaded. Junior Raven Smith reached on a walk to load the bases again. During sophomore Alejandra Barcenas’ at-bat she was hit by a pitch which allowed Woodard to score A&T’s final run.

The Eagles were unable to respond to the Aggies massive lead in the fourth and fifth innings, causing the game to end due to the run rule.

Edmonds was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Woodard finished with a game-high four RBI.

London Booker (7-22) pitched two innings and recorded the loss for N.C. Central. Booker finished with two strikeouts while Dominique Wilson appeared in two innings and also struck out two.

Following the game, A&T announced and recognized its 2014 award winners. Outfielder Dasia Moore was named Freshman of the Year, junior second baseman Zebresha Blakeney was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year, senior catcher Sabrina Edmonds was named the Offensive Player of the Year and sophomore shortstop Alejandra Barcenas was selected as the Aggies All-Around Player.
