JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After day one of the 2014 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round, seniors Desmond Lawrence and Darryl Williams “set the tone” by qualifying for the semifinals of the 100 meter dash, taking place Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Lawrence is placed sixth going into the semis at a time of 10.40, while Williams ran 10.64 placing 22nd.
“Desmond ran a solid race and goes into tomorrow seeded sixth. I definitely believe he’ll make the NCAA Championships. Darryl made a few technical mistakes but his experience and maturity helped him to make the next round. If he executes like I know he can, he too should qualify for the NCAA Championships,” said Duane Ross, director of track and field programs.
Freshman Todd Townsend will open the running events for the Aggies Friday at 5 p.m., in the 110 meter hurdles preliminaries. Freshman Joshua Peoples along with Lawrence will be competing in the 200 meter dash Friday at 8 p.m.
“Our freshmen open up tomorrow…Josh and Todd, and I believe they’re ready. They’ve had an excellent week of training and now it’s time for them to relax, have fun, and compete hard,” says Ross.
Senior Keenan Smith will also compete at 5 p.m.., in the triple jump preliminaries.
“Keenan is absolutely ready!! He’s been in the zone since conference. I’m expecting some very big jumps from him this weekend. When he’s on, he’s on,” said Ross.
