GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team has not had a schedule in eight years, but they do now. A&T men’s tennis returns to action by competing in four fall tournaments before starting its regular season at home against a Big 10 opponent on Jan. 18. The HBCU National Tournament will be A&T’s first competition of the fall, Sept. 18-21 in Atlanta. A&T’s other fall tournaments include the Wake Forest Invitational (Oct. 10-11) in Winston-Salem, N.C., the ITA Regional Championship (Oct. 16-20) in Durham, N.C., and the Elon Invitational (Oct. 25-27) in Elon, N.C.

To celebrate the return of men’s tennis to regular-season competition, the Aggies have invited the Michigan State Spartans to town for a home match at the Aggies Tennis Complex 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18.

“Michigan State is excited for the opportunity to play the North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team in their first season back,” said MSU head coach Gene Orlando. “Kudos to athletics director Earl M. Hilton III for reinstating men’s tennis, which has not been the norm in athletics. The game of tennis has grown extremely popular in North Carolina, and I’m sure it won’t be long before the Aggies are competing for a MEAC title.”

A&T’s other home matches are against Presbyterian on Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.; Pfeiffer on Feb. 3 at 3 p.m.; Maryland Eastern Shore on Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.; Lees McRae on March 2 at 2 p.m.; and Gardner-Webb on March 11. A time has not been announced for the match.

MEAC Round-Up competition will go a long way in determining whether the Aggies qualify for the MEAC championships April 17-20 in Cayce, S.C. A&T will take on MEAC power S.C. State on March 13 in Florence, S.C., at 3 p.m. Two days later the Aggies will face Bethune-Cookman at 3 p.m., in Florence. A&T’s other two conference matches are at N.C. Central on March 27 at 1 p.m., and at Norfolk State on April 3 at 3 p.m.

The top four teams from the MEAC south and north divisions will advance to play in the conference championships. Road matches are at Appalachian State (Jan. 25, 2 p.m.); at Wofford (Jan. 31, 12:30 p.m.); at Charlotte (Feb. 7, 10 a.m.); at Campbell (Feb. 18, 2 p.m.); at Davidson (Feb. 22, 1 p.m.); at Chowan (Feb. 26, 3 p.m.) at Elon (Feb. 28, 9 a.m.); at Belmont Abbey (March 6, 1 p.m.); and at Longwood (April 2, 3:30 p.m.).

“Our spring schedule is daunting to say the least,” said A&T head coach Bruce Myers. “With difficult non-conference matches against Michigan State, Davidson, UNC Charlotte, Elon and App State, I think we will be very well-prepared when we get into the MEAC schedule.”
