 Tyrone Dawson

Tyrone Dawson became an assistant coach for North Carolina A&T baseball in 2015. Dawson, who has an extensive junior college background in coaching, will assists in coaching Aggie catchers while assisting with recruiting and hitters.

During his first season with the Aggies he helped Adan Ordonez make the transition from middle infielder to catcher because of a season-ending injury to the starter. As the starting catcher for the Aggies, Ordonez captured MEAC Rookie of the Year honors along with first-team All-MEAC recognition. He was also named a Freshman Louisville Slugger All-American as well as N.C. A&T Male Rookie of the Year. 

Dawson became an assistant coach at Chipola (Marianna, Fla.) in January of 2013. His responsibilities included catchers, outfielders, assisting with pitchers and he was the recruiting coordinator under head coach Jeff Johnson.  During his two-year stint at Chipola, the Indians recorded a 74-33 record, won consecutive Panhandle conference championships in 2013 and ’14. Over the same span nine players – LHP Michael Mader (3rd round), OF Danny Mars (6th), RHP Taylor Lewis (9th), RHP Palmer Betts, RHP Carlos Misell, C Ian Rice, OF Isiah Gilliam, C Christian Correa and RHP Tucker Simpson – were drafted by various Major League Baseball teams. Fifteen players under Dawson signed Division I letters of intent.

In addition to his work at Chipola, Dawson also worked with Roman Quinn. Quinn, a 2011 second-round pick to the Philadelphia Phillies, started working with Dawson as a 10th grader. Drafted out of high school, Quinn was assigned to the EAS Eastern Division All-Stars (2015), the All-Prospect Team for the Arizona Fall League (2014), was ranked the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect by MLB.com (2014), led the New York Penn League in triples, stolen bases and runs scored (2012) and was named second-team preseason All-American by Rawlings (2011). Quinn called Dawson one of the hardest working and knowledgeable men he knows.

Dawson played his final year of college baseball at Toccoa Falls College where he played center field for the Screaming Eagles under head coach Justin Pollock. As the leadoff man, Dawson helped TFC win the 2012 National Christian College Athletic Association Division II national championship. Before attending TFC, Dawson played two years of college baseball at Chipola under Johnson. In 2011, he helped the Indians win the Panhandle conference title, the Florida College System Activities Association Region 8 title and they placed fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.

Dawson received an associate of arts degree in law enforcement from Chipola in 2012.
