GREENSBORO (February 14, 2017) – North Carolina A&T has a big week ahead of them as they are set for their home season-opener against Appalachian State on Thursday Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m. before hosting the Aggie Invitational Friday through Sunday at Aggie Softball Complex.

The Aggies started the season 3-2 last weekend at the Gardner-Webb Invitational in Boiling Springs, taking both tournament seed games to extra innings after securing the No. 1 seed.  The team hit a .260 batting average with 39 hits, 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs lead by sophomore Zadasia Waddell.  The pitcher finished the tournament 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA over 22 innings pitched, but was just as impressive at the plate.  She went 6-for-8 with two doubles and an RBI while senior Kimberly Brunson and shortstop Stephanie Williams each had four RBIs.

After going 0-2 on the road against Appalachian State to end last season, the Aggies are looking to return the favor in 2017. N.C. A&T will host the Mountaineers on Thursday, as well as an afternoon matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.  Appalachian State started their season 1-3 in the Jacksonville River City Leadoff last weekend, defeating George Mason 2-1 in their final game of the tournament.  Their biggest loss came at the hands of College of Charleston, who won 12-1.  The Mountaineers are lead at the plate by freshman Alisha Josey who hit .357 in her 14 at bats, producing a home run and two RBIs.  Vanessa Ciocatto and Kenzie Longanecker have been the biggest forces from the circle through four games of Appalachian State, throwing a 0.64 and 1.85 ERA respectively over 11 innings each.

The start of the Aggie Invitational on Friday gives N.C. A&T little time to turnaround, but after going 4-0 in their own tournament last year, the Aggies are obviously hoping for a repeat.  There will be some new faces in the tournament this season as N.C. A&T welcomes University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Valparaiso, and Howard.  The Aggies open the tournament against Valparaiso on Friday at 12:30 in the first meeting between the two programs.  It will be a season-opener for the Crusaders who finished last season 18-34.  In the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, N.C. A&T will face Howard in the teams’ first meeting since the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament where the Aggies defeated the Bison 2-0 on May 8.  Howard finished 2016 with a 9-32 record, missing the cut for the MEAC Tournament.

Saturday offers some rest for the Aggies, who play Valparaiso in the final game of the day scheduled for 3 p.m..  N.C. A&T closes out their tournament against UMBC on Sunday at 3 p.m.  The Aggies are 0-1 all-time against the Retrievers, who defeated N.C. A&T 4-2 on March 8, 2003 in the Elon Tournament.  Since then, UMBC opened this season 1-3 at the Belmont Winter Fest Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. last weekend and finished 25-31 last season.
